TEXTING FOR DOLLARS
By: MetroSource News (Dallas, TX) -- The American Red Cross is reaching out for financial assistance to help Hurricane Gustav evacuees.
Red Cross officials say the storm spared the city of New Orleans directly, but thousands of homes have been damaged in other areas, and evacuees will be turning to the Red Cross for shelter, food and other assistance. Hurricane Gustav is expected to cost the Red Cross between 40 and 70-million-dollars. Officials say the agency has only raised two-million-dollars for hurricane relief efforts, and three more storms are headed to the U.S. The Wireless Foundation has helped make it easy to donate five-dollars to the Red Cross, by text messaging the keyword "GIVE" to "2HELP." The financial gift will purchase food, blankets, toiletries, clean-up supplies and ensure that the Red Cross can move volunteers into affected areas and provide mental health and first aid assistance. For more information, call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
